Sayuri is a 2.5D singer/songwriter, who sings while strumming her acoustic guitar. Her activities on SNS and the Web are based in 2D imagery, and she incorporates these into her 3D live performances, hence why she is said to live in the 2.5D world.
Sayuri made her major debut on August 26, 2015 with “Mikazuki”, the closing theme of Fuji TV’s Noitamina anime series “Rampo Kitan: Game of Laplace”. The rough-hewn beauty of the song linked strongly to the world of the anime and she won tremendous support with a hit right from the start. Her 4th single “Furaregai Girl”, written and produced by RADWIMPS’ Yojiro Noda, also garnered great attention. Her first full-length album, Mikazuki no Kokai, released May 17, 2017, debuted at #1 on the Oricon’s daily album chart on its first day of release! It also ranked #3 on its weekly album chart. The collaboration single “Dawn” with “MY FIRST STORY”, resulted in even greater success than previous singles. On Nov 29, 2019, Sayuri released her latest single“About a Voyage”, which was written to be the closing theme of the fourth season of My Hero Academia, a massively popular anime.
Her lyrics resonate strongly with people in their teens and twenties, who might feel smothered in their day-to-day lives as they search for their own place to belong and how best to live their own lives. She hopes for her voice to reach her listeners’ hearts, embrace their loneliness, and turn it to hope. Dubbed “Sanketsu-girl” (hypoxia girl), she has become an icon of the “Sanketsu generation,” who feel a mix of inferiority and superiority based on their distinct values and sensibilities.
One by one, more and more people are calling themselves “Sayuri maniacs,” touched by her presence and her 2.5D world. Don’t take your eyes off this cross-dimensional artist!
